Monty Python: “Working-class Playwright”
Typical topics in humour are prejudice, taboo (sex, death, religion), the ‘establishment’/ people in power, cultural differences, embarrassing behavior. What topics and stereotypes are treated here?
Write an essay (600-800 words) in which you comment on Monty Python: “Working-class playwright”. Your essay must include:
- A plot summary in which you briefly sum up what happens and describe the composition
- A characterization of son, father and mother
- Examples of humour (e.g. exaggeration, understatement, the absurd, pun, joke, irony, coincidence, misunderstanding, cross-purpose, black humour, things turned upside down or other…)
- How can the sketch be seen as a comment on the British social class system?
(I suggest you see the sketch on youtube before writing about it)
